ORGANIZATIONAL STRUCTURE

The Śramani Institute is an international organization, with two separately incorporated nonprofit entities operating autonomously. The Śramani Institute-USA was registered in 2011 in the United States of America (USA) as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. The Śramani Institute-India was registered in 2012 in India as a nonprofit company under Section 25 of the Companies Act, 1956 (now Section 8 of the Companies Act, 2013), with 80G/12A tax-exemption.

JOURNEY

Incorporation/ registration in the United States

The Śramani Institute (Śramani), a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, is founded by Dr. Kakoli Mitra, Esq., in the United States, along with an all-female, all-minority Board of Directors comprising academics, scientists, and scholars.

2011

Incorporation/ registration in India

The Śramani Institute (Śramani), an 80G tax-exempt Section 8/25 nonprofit, is founded by Dr. Mitra in India, along with a Board of Directors comprising entrepreneurs and academics.

2012

Begin working with Ādivāsi/ Indigenous peoples to revitalize their own Knowtep

Śramani begins working with Ādivāsi/ Indigenous peoples in India and North America to help them revitalize their ancient Knowledge-Technologies-Practices (Ādi-Knowtep), so that they can self-reliantly solve the ecosocial challenges they face.

2013

Establish offices with staff in Chennai and Kolkata

For the institute’s work with Ādivāsi communities in Tamil Nadu, West Bengal, and Arunachal Pradesh, Śramani establishes offices and local staff in Chennai and Kolkata, India.

2015

Hiatus due to global pandemic

Due to the global coronavirus pandemic, Śramani’s offices and operations are shut down for a few years.

2020

Listening tour

Dr. Mitra begins a listening tour across North America and India to understand the types of ecosocial challenges various changemakers (individuals and organizations) work on and how they address these challenges.

2023

Launch EaRTh

EaRTh (Ecosymbionts all Regenerate Together), a custom-built professionally edited knowledge-sharing and community-building platform for grassroots changemakers, innovators, and knowledge-holders across the world, is launched.

2024

Birth of FiveBecomings/ Pañchabhūmi

Wishing to find an effective integrated approach reducing the myriad ecosocial challenges faced by marginalized communities and the ecologies they rely on, Dr. Mitra combines Śramani’s learnings with those of other changemakers and her own interdisciplinary expertise to create the FiveBecomings/ Pañchabhūmi framework.

2024

Establish first FiveBecomings/ Pañchabhūmi field office in Chhattisgarh, India

To implement the world’s first-ever FiveBecomings/ Pañchabhūmi project, the first Śramani field office specifically for implementing FiveBecomings/ Pañchabhūmi is established in Khadgawan, Chhattisgarh, India.
